Mail Unread Menu is a simple menubar application which can provide you with a quick and easy way to see how many unread email messages are in Apple's Mail. Unlike other menubar notification applications, Mail Unread Menu is actually a plugin for Mail.app, which means that the count is instantaneously updated whenever you recieve new email or change the status of a message

It is free and it is a must have for Apple Mail in my opinion. Still works with High Sierra and Mail 11.5. You do need to download the free app, MailPluginFix, and use this to fix this plugin to then work.

Mail 3.0 marks Mail Unread Menu as incompatible. It works, but Mail bundle installation is required every time Mail is relaunched. With Magnesium-app's Mail Satellite there's no such problem ($10).

It is free and it is a must have for Apple Mail. Still works with El Capitan and Mail 9.3. You do need to download the free app, MailPluginFix, and use this to fix this plugin to then work.

This best-of-class works in Yosemite by moving it back into ~/Library/Mail/Bundles folder if you get a warning that it has been disabled.. And MailPluginFix can be a help.
